The Retirement Business Services Technology (RBS) team provides product and application-based design, development, testing, deployment and production support to the Retirement Business Services business units.  Particularly in support of web, trustee, custodial, recordkeeping and compliance products for Schwab Corporate and Retirement Services third party provider retirement product and compliance offerings. 

This role requires self-motivated seasoned front-end engineer with strong experience in JavaScript/HTML5/CSS3 with the passion of building responsive web applications with great user experience creating a product that will have positive impact on millions on users. The ability to deliver innovative, low cost, reliable solutions is key to success in this role. Our Software Development Engineers are driven to learn, grow, and continuously contribute to evolving the Schwab experience and technology.

What you’ll do:

  • Build high performing and scalable responsive web applications using modern front-end technologies like: Angular/ReactJS/VueJS with the goal of achieving maintainability, availability, scalability, and security.
  • Strong ability to work with UX designers and product managers to develop dynamic user experiences
  • Troubleshoots business, production issues, and suggest opportunities for improvement.
  • Work with other Engineers, Architecture, Product Management, QA, and Operations teams to develop innovative solutions that meet business needs with respect to functionality, performance, scalability, reliability, realistic implementation schedules and alignment to development principles and product goals

What you are good at

What you have:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related field OR related practical experience
  • 3-4 years of professional experience in front-end development technologies like NodeJS, JavaScript, HTML5, CSS3 and REST API with experience with at least one popular JavaScript framework (e.g. ReactJS, VueJS, or Angular) and test frameworks (Jest, Mocha, Jasmine, Selenium, etc.)
  • Experience with development tools such as npm, gulp and grunt with view layout and rendering technologies (e.g., responsiveness, progressive enhancement, browser/device support) with deep understanding of front-end architecture and data-driven development
  • All aspects of front-end web development testing (unit, functional, integration, end-to-end, cross browser/device)
  • Must be a critical thinker and solutions-oriented analytical, troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently and to effectively interact and collaborate with all types of stakeholders, both technical and business, peers and management Detailed oriented self-starter

What you have

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficient in a broad range of software design approaches and common UX patterns.
  • Experience with front-end development (using Ionic, Capacitor, Android Studio, XCode) for hybrid and/or native mobile applications on Android and iOS
  • Knows when (and when not) to use front-end software design patterns (e.g., asynchronicity, data binding, modules, MVC, objects, promises)
  • Detailed knowledge of functional programming patterns (or OOP with a desire to move to functional programming)
  • You’re a self-starter with a “can do” attitude who can take ownership of projects and drive them to completion with acute attention to detail (not just what but understanding why part too) and results oriented with excellent problem-solving abilities

Nice to Have:

  • An active GitHub page or other portfolio of up-to-date open-source contributions having an online portfolio of work.
  • Experience in building REST API – micro/mini services derived through domain driven design conforming to JSON API specifications, preferably with some native cloud development exposure.
  • Experience in back-end development including middleware or a vendor-based messaging platform with devOps enabling production supporting, monitoring and alerting mechanism.
